The Specialist Library for Ethnicity and Health

23 October 2006 sees the launch of a new Specialist Library from the National Library for Health.  Crossing the professional boundaries, the Specialist Library for Ethnicity and Health aims "to be the central UK point of reference for research evidence and guidance on best practice relating to the health of an ethnically diverse population".  This should be useful if you are seeking information covering all aspects of health care delivery, from individual patient care to broader public health concerns, and includes guidance on the design of health care services for diverse ethnic groups.

E-books

A wide range of full-text electronic books have been purchased by the NHS from prestigious publishers and made available (with your NHS Athens password) through MyiLibrary.  The complete output of WHO titles is also there.

The books have been chosen by Mental Health practitioners and information specialists, and what is particularly interesting is that titles as diverse as Emergency Medicine by David Cline and Managing Information and Knowledge in the Public Sector by Eileen Milner are available.

A new improved interface is being launched on 7 August and it will be easier to search or browse for titles that may interest you or for information contained within chapters.

Here is the list of the top 10 titles used between April 2005 and March 2006:

New Oxford Textbook of Psychiatry, vol 1
New Oxford Textbook of Psychiatry, vol 2
Maudsley Handbook of Practical Psychiatry
Cognitive Therapy for Chronic and Persistent Depression
Companion to Psychiatric Studies
Think Good – Feel Good:  A Cognitive Behaviour Therapy Workbook for Children and Young People
The Case Study Guide to Cognitive Behaviour Therapy of Psychosis
Handbook of Clinical Health Psychology
Assertive Outreach in Mental Health
Handbook of Motivational Counseling: Concepts, Approaches and Assessment

NLH user survey

The National Library for Health website, www.library.nhs.uk, is carrying out a survey of the information needs of NHS staff.

The survey can be accessed at http://www.tfpl.com/questionnaire/nhs/nhs01.cfm and they're interested in the views of all NHS staff - not just clinicians.

They say:

The survey, which covers all NHS staff, is designed to identify the information needs people experience in the daily course of their jobs. The results of the survey will be used to develop the content and services available via the NLH and through local NHS library and information services, with the aim of supporting not only clinical and management decision making, but also continuing professional development and skills training. The survey should take no more than 10 minutes to complete.
